Romano Tondat is the founder and driving force behind the family business Tondat, which has its roots in Italy.

Late 19th and early 20th century, many Italian terrazzieri emigrated to various European countries. One of them was Santo Tondat, the father of Romano.

Santo came from Codroipo (northern Italy) which, together with Arba, Spilimbergo and Solimbergo, was the basis of the terrazzieri: craftsmen specialized in the art of the Venetian terrazzo, also called granito.

Initially Santo worked with some Italian contractors in Bruges and Ghent. Around 1930 he came to Eeklo where the interest for Venetian terrazzo floors was particularly high. Those who could afford it, let place such a floor: individuals, schools, hospitals, cinemas...

In the thirties the interest in Venetian terrazzo diminished and after World War II a lot of Italians were forced to monitor the placement of industrial concrete floors.

A lot of the expertise of the terrazzieri went lost and many workshops closed their doors. Some of them were able to survive this difficult period en rediscovered the ancient techniques.

One of them was Romano Tondat, who had prepared himself for this revival. His effort formed the basis for "Tondat Mosaici" and "Romano & Nino Tondat".

Romano's vision was perhaps futuristic but proves, with Nino and Gino, that he had made the right choice which gave "Tondat Mosaici" and "Romano & Nino Tondat" the prestige and reputation they have now.
